In 1882 came to Barron and purchased 120 acres of farm land that had been homesteaded but not improved. Three years later he brought his bride Lena Kretchma to the farm. He added 40 acres several years later and 115 acres were under plow. He built a large frame home, a substantial barn, granary, tool shed. their dairy cattle were a fine herd of high grade guernsey cattle. He served as township supervisor and was on the school board. He retired from farm in 1935 and turned it over to his son Ernst, Jr and grandson Ervin Kolb. He reared 11 children. He had 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. All of his children became hard working productive citizens. His family was one of fifteen that established the Evangelical Lutheran Bethleham Church. When he retired from farming in 1935 the farm was purchased by his son Ernst who farmed it until the 1950's when it was purchased by his son Ervin Edwin. |
