Ernst was born in Weimar, Sachsen Germany. His father was a charcoal burner. The family cross the ocean in 1850 on the Bark Edmond, a sailing vessel and after seven weeks after leaving Breman landed in New Orleans. The oldest daughter Christina was not on the ship. They came to Wisconsin, USA via Mississippi and the old Hennepin Canal. They settled on the farm owned by Robert Fiedler and lived there until he purchased it and later sold to his son Henry. When he came with his parents they settled in Centerville. At the age of 20 years he left home and worked in the copper mines in northern Michigan. In 22 August 1862, when Lincoln send out his second call for volunteers and he enlisted in the 27th Regiment of the Wisconsin, USA Volunteers. He was in the battle of Vicksburg, the battle of Jenkins Ferry, in the ill-fated Red River expedition and later in the siege and capture of Mobile. On the 29th of August 1865 he was given his honorable discharge at Brownsville, Texas. Documented in the Civil War Census. After marrying he settled in Meeme and had 13 children two with their mother proceded him in death. In 1911 he made a trip to the south re-visiting his previous campaigns and was at the unveiling of the Wisconsin, USA Monument at Vicksburg. In the spring of1912 he was very ill and never did regain his strength. In june 1912 he decided to visit his children and relatives. This took him to Chicago, Davenport, Iowa, Granville North Dakota, New Richmond Minn, Barron and Thorp Wisconsin, USA. After returning from this trip he became sick and shortly thereafter died.
